“THERE WERE TEARS, SCREAMS, HISTERICS – A HORRIFIC SCENE”: JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN POST-WAR UKRAINE AND PRESERVING THE MEMORY OF THE HOLOCAUST

Abstract

The selection of documents proposed for publication is due to the implementation by the compiler of a broader research project to study the forms and mechanisms of preservation and transmission of the memory of the Holocaust by the Jews of Dnipropetrovsk and the Ukrainian SSR in general. The indicated materials allow us to see the general trends in the attitude of the Council and the state in general to any activity on the part of Jewish religious associations (both registered and unregistered), to outline the position of the authorities on the memorialization of the Jewish genocide and the importance of commemorative activities for the life of communities in the post-war period. The publication covers documentary materials from 1945 (the time of the active process of registration of Jewish religious communities) to the spring of 1949, when the wave of state anti-Semitism was gaining strength.
